Why choose Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology?

Chemical and biotechnological processes are key to many of the solutions that will shape a greener and healthier future.

As an MSc in Engineering student in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, you become part of the work of developing processes for producing sustainable materials, cleaner energy, healthier foods and new medicines.

You learn to combine knowledge of chemistry, biology and technology to create real solutions that benefit both people and the environment. The programme takes place in an international study environment. Teaching thus is in English.

What will you learn?

On the programme, you learn to understand, design and optimise chemical and biotechnological processes – from laboratory experiments to full-scale production. You gain insight into subjects such as chemical and biochemical process technology, numerical methods, chemometrics, physical chemistry, risk assessment, economics and philosophy of science.

Along the way, you develop competences to create technical solutions, develop new products and processes, and conduct research into new technology.

You will be equipped to design chemical and biochemical processing plants, develop and validate analytical methods, and think holistically about technology, resources and the environment.

Teaching methods

Teaching is project- and research-based, and you work closely with your fellow students in groups where you plan and carry out your own projects. In your final year, you write your thesis, often in collaboration with a company or as part of a research project at the university.

Užsakant testo rezultato išsiuntimą iš centro naudoti University of Southern Denmark  kodą 7969. Rinkitės "other - department not listed".

You can apply if you hold a similar, relevant degree within Science or Engineering. To be considered, your degree must include a minimum of:

  • 10 ECTS in chemical engineering not including chemical reactor design and/or bioreactor design
  • 5 ECTS in chemical reactor design and/or bioreactor design
  • 15 ECTS in general and analytical chemistry, organic and inorganic chemistry
  • 10 ECTS in biotechnology, which can include subjects from biotechnology, environmental biotechnology, industrial biotechnology, and/or food biotechnology, but not including bioreactor design.
  • 15 ECTS in laboratory practice that must include analytical chemistry and/or biochemistry, and could include applied physics, chemical engineering unit operations, or other engineering related lab activities etc.
  • 10 ECTS in physical chemistry, thermodynamics and electrochemistry
  • 15 ECTS in mathematic
  • 5 ECTS in statistics

What does the programme lead to?

Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology Engineers will typically be employed in the chemical industry, the food industry or the pharmaceutical industry, in environmental governance, or at laboratories. Here you will be responsible for research, development, production, analyses, and environmental and quality assurance

With a master of science in engineering degree in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology you will be qualified for jobs as, for example:

  • Project manager
  • Development engineer
  • Manager of development department
  • Researcher
  • Analyst
  • Head of laboratory
  • Teacher
  • Consultant
  • Head of quality

You could, for example, work in:

  • The chemical industry
  • The food industry
  • The pharmaceutical industry
  • Environmental governance
  • Power plants
  • Laboratories

Your tasks could be to:

  • Design and implement new process engineering plants e.g. for biochemical or food production
  • Develop and optimise current plants e.g. for pharmaceutical industry
  • Develop and optimise methods of analysis and biological techniques
  • Work as a consultant for private and public companies within chemical engineering related to environmental and work environment issues
  • Develop products and processes where chemical issues are significant
  • Build and operate reactors
  • Design industrial processing of primary biological production e.g. for food or bio fuels

With this programme you are qualified for a job in Denmark or abroad and for studies at PhD level.
