Neuroscience and Psychology BSc (Hons)
For the Neuroscience element of the course, you will explore the mystery of the human brain: the central nervous system, the impact of drugs upon it, and the molecular biology of diseases and disorders of the brain.
Studying Neuroscience, you’ll discover how we learn and remember, how the brain controls the body, and how the brain can be targeted by disease but in some instances can repair itself. Within the course are interesting related disciplines such as neuroanatomy, neuropharmacology and neuropathology.
Working in diverse ways, including in our superb labs, you’ll develop your independent research skills as you learn to acquire, interpret and analyse data from multiple sources. You’ll also understand how neuroscience can help us understand medical problems and improve the quality of life.
For the Psychology element of this course, you will be taught by staff who are actively engaged in research with specialisms in social psychology, developmental psychology, cognition and neuropsychology, biological psychology health and wellbeing and a range of applied areas. The emphasis of the course is on understanding how psychology impacts on everyday life; from developing a sense of self and negotiating personal relationships to influencing judgments about matters of global significance, such as climate change. At Keele we aim to produce psychology graduates who are ready to use their psychology skills and knowledge to make a real difference.
You will be challenged with exciting ideas and findings from psychology and neuroscience. In Psychology, you will study social and developmental psychology, cognitive and biological psychology and research methods. In Neuroscience you learn about the nervous system, its various components and how they work, and how they are affected by disease. In your final year you will carry out a research project in each subject under the expert guidance of an academic staff member. Examples include the psychological impact of pain, assessing effects of direct eye contact on physiological responses in people with autism characteristics, using cell culture as a transplant therapy, using an electron microscope to investigate cell structure. You’ll benefit from a supportive environment as well as fantastic lab facilities and equipment.

Your degree will open up exciting careers in sectors as varied as healthcare, scientific research, pharmacology, IT, publishing and more. You might choose to work as a research scientist in academia or the drug industry, or work as a clinical neuroscientist in the hospital sector. With or without further study, you might go on to become a clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, doctor, pharmacologist or systems analyst.

By completing a Psychology course, you are taking the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist and a requirement for further study and training for a career in psychology. You could take up any number of very interesting careers in psychology, perhaps working as a neuropsychologist or as a clinical, counselling, educational, forensic, occupational or sports psychologist. Whatever path you choose in your working life, the Keele Psychology degree aims to develop a psychological perspective on human behaviour which is valued in a huge range of careers. Many of our graduates choose to pursue exciting careers beyond psychology, including in education, health, social care, management, marketing and many more.
There is an option to undertake a laboratory placement year in your third year as a part of the Neuroscience component of your degree.
The psychology modules on this course are accredited by the British Psychological Society, a necessary first step for many professional careers in psychology, such as clinical, counselling, educational, forensic, occupational or sports psychology, and a prerequisite to becoming a chartered psychologist. Combining psychology and neuroscience prepares students for these psychology careers as well as careers in teaching, scientific civil service, civil service, IT, journalism and others.
With additional training, options include hospital pathology and clinical assessment, and research. If you choose the industrial placement, you’ll have the added benefit of significant work experience to offer employers. Alternatively this combination makes excellent preparation for postgraduate study in the subjects of Psychology or Neuroscience.
