This course, accredited with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), provides an accelerated route to becoming a registered nurse, undertaken in two years full time study at post-graduate level, and is aimed at degree holders with appropriate experience.

Mental health nursing is a constantly evolving field, with as many as one in four people believed to experience some mental health condition each year. The Mental Health Nursing programme at LSBU is designed to equip you with the skills and competencies to meet the challenges of providing effective mental health care.

Throughout the course you will gain practice experience in a wide range of in-patient and community settings, reflecting the diversity of mental health specialisms. This could include acute psychiatry, child and adolescent mental health, forensic psychiatry, eating disorders, addictions and rehabilitation.

The main resource mental health nurses have to draw upon is themselves and how they engage effectively with service users and others. We in turn place a strong emphasis on helping you develop self awareness and effective interpersonal skills. These skills underpin specific physical, psychological and social interventions; holistic approaches to care; and being able to work confidently with multi-disciplinary colleagues. Service user input is integral to programme delivery.

You will be required to make an APL;  a claim for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL). This is necessary to ensure that all the requirements of the NMC are fully met when following this accelerated route to registration. Your previous degree study, together with appropriate practice experience can contribute to your APL claim, in order to meet entry requirements for this programme. Guidance notes and support are provided to assist you in your APL application. Students apply for APL through evidence of prior certificated learning and the production of a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates achievement of specific programme outcomes through experience. The APL Portfolio will need to be submitted before the start of the course.
