Project management is an exciting and effective management strategy which presents challenging opportunities to the ambitious construction management professional. The applied skills and competencies of a construction project manager are necessary for the successful completion of complex construction projects, particularly within the ever-changing context of the construction industry. This programme is aimed at those looking for the management skills required to progress towards senior management positions within construction-related organizations, particularly internationally-driven contracting companies. These skills include knowledge and understanding of communication, organization and innovative construction practice and concepts: both at a strategic level and in construction project team management.

This programme aims to extend knowledge of construction project management practice in terms of delivering effective and efficient construction-related projects. It engenders an understanding of the role of the construction project manager in capturing client and stakeholder values and translating them into successful construction practice. The generation of a comprehensive understanding of the construction project life-cycle from inception to completion, commissioning, operation and maintenance will be established. Students will be encouraged in their ability to operate and lead in a range of team settings across disciplines and cultures, whilst evaluating and managing innovative construction practice and resolving unforeseen production-related problems. The duration of the full-time programme is 12 months (1 calendar year). The programme commences each September.

The Project Management Dissertation module builds upon the concepts and theories presented during the Applied Research Methods module.  The module requires students to further develop, consolidate and apply research skills that are expected from a postgraduate student when investigating a relevant issue in the field of project management.  Students are required to undertake a piece of analytical, reflective academic research that results in the production of an original 20,000-word Masters dissertation relevant to the core philosophy of the programme.

This is an ideal postgraduate programme for graduates who want to progress within the project-based construction industry. It is ideally suited to relatively new graduates with restricted construction-related work experience and also highly experienced construction-related practitioners. The programme may be followed to enhance existing career opportunities within the construction industry; as preparation for transfer from one industrial sector to the construction industry; or as preparation for further postgraduate study, i.e. Ph.D. Demand for construction project managers who can demonstrate the skills to effectively manage construction projects, particularly international projects, continues to grow both nationally and internationally. Indeed, opportunities for a varied, well-paid, challenging and international career in construction project management are significant.
