The programme aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills and values to respond effectively and professionally to the different challenges and dilemmas which may be experienced by the service users and carers with whom they work.

The focus of the programme is on working with children, young people and adults who may be vulnerable and encounter harm which places them at risk. Fundamental to good practice is the ability of students to develop critically reflective practice where they are able to deal with complex dilemmas in a confident and competent manner. They are supported to become proactive problem solvers, basing their decisions on evidence-based research and best practice. Well-developed skills in communication, assessment, planning, monitoring, review and evaluation of social work practice are key.

The programme works closely with service users and carers and a wide range of professionals to ensure students gain a deep level of understanding of issues across the social care arena. There is an emphasis on partnership with employers, service users and carers who are involved in planning, developing and delivery of the programme.

Students gain requisite knowledge of human behaviour and social processes. They critically explore the different forms that oppression and inequality assume in society and develop an understanding of the effects of disadvantage and marginalisation. Students are encouraged to select, implement and evaluate social work interventions that engender empowerment and build on people's strengths.

The programme has been approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Therefore, on successful completion of the full programme of study; its graduates are eligible to register with the HCPC and to use the legally protected title of 'social worker'. Registered social workers are employed in a range of services, statutory and independent, and in different sectors, for example, health, education and the personal social services. Once registered, newly qualified students will commence on an Assessed and Supported Year in Practice (ASYP).

The Programme addresses the HCPC Standards of proficiency for social workers and the generic Standards of education and training. Please visit www.hpc-uk.org for further details.

Since January 2012, The College of Social Work (TCSW) has been the professional body for social work. Implementing the work of the Social Work Reform Board (SWRB), the programme integrates TCSW guidance and recommendations for courses of qualifying social work education paying particular regard to the Professional Capability Framework (2012) and curriculum guidance. The programme has sought endorsement from TCSW which will be considered in early 2015.

All students completing this Programme are awarded both a degree and a professional qualification that gives them eligibility to register as a social worker with the regulator and therefore work as a social worker. At the point of award of the degree the individual will be eligible to register with the Health and Care Professions Council and to call themselves a social worker.

At this point students will be in a position to commence their assessed and supported year in employment (ASYE) as a newly qualified social worker ready for their first stage in a social work career.

Social Work students following graduation from the University have taken up employment in a range of statutory, voluntary and independent agencies. A significant number of those who graduated in 2013 have gained employment in Adult or Children's Services in the following Councils: Hampshire, Southampton City, Portsmouth City and West Berkshire. A number of students are working for voluntary organisations and local services. Students are working across the sector with a wide range of service users. One recent graduate has taken up an internment opportunity for a NGO overseas to widen her knowledge and skills.

The Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) record collects information about what those completing university go on to do six months after graduation. The Careers Service undertakes DLHE on an annual basis through surveys and a data collection process. DLHE is designed and strictly controlled by HESA.

While DLHE provides accurate information about first destinations, this data needs to be viewed with some degree of care. Six months after leaving university is often a time of much uncertainty and change for leavers; many will be unsure of their long-term career plans and may take a temporary job or time out. The destinations of graduates only six months out of university do not necessarily reflect longer term career success and are therefore a crude measure of employability. Therefore, DLHE data should be viewed as merely a 'snapshot' of one particular year's experiences at a specific point in time.
