The growing demand for natural resources such as land, drinking water, food, energy, and raw materials for industrial production is resulting in an ever greater pressure on the world's natural resources. Human activities inevitably produce waste which can harm humans and environment. An ever growing demand for recreational areas and a clean environment as well as the concern for animal and plant diversity have resulted in an increased effort to protect the environment.
Sustainable development has become a key issue in environmental policy and today's environmental protection aims not only at the cleaning up after the pollution facing us today but also at pollution prevention through for instance optimization of energy production manufacturing and waste management and recycling.
