If you’ve spent much of your life taking things apart to see how they work, this course is for you. As a mechanical engineer, you will use your knowledge of fundamental engineering principles like mechanics, materials, thermo-fluids and computer-aided design to analyse and design objects and systems with motion.
On this programme you will be tutored by world-class academics with both industry and research experience. You will also have the opportunity to work on industry and research-led projects.
You will graduate with a rounded education that prepares you to take ideas all the way from concept to production and launch. The degree is professionally accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering Designers as meeting complete fulfilment of the educational requirements to become a Chartered Engineer.

Industrial Placement is a 48 week placement with a company which is assessed by portfolio and contributes to the course outcomes. You are responsible for identifying and winning the placement, but the University supports this via links to industry and training in application and interview skills.
Engineering graduates are in greater demand than ever and due to the broad and very diverse nature of Mechanical Engineering, a variety of career options are available to you, including careers in aerospace, the automotive industry, biotechnology, computing and electronics, manufacturing, energy conversion, the Ministry of Defence and research development. If you’re interested in the applied scientific and mathematical aspects of the discipline, you can carry on into a career in research and teaching.
