Civil Engineering (BEng)
With strong links with existing courses within the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment, the programme is aimed at students wishing to become Chartered Civil Engineers in industry. The course will enhance the overall programmes by providing academic and vocational content within the areas of engineering mathematics, structural design, geotechnics, materials science and civil engineering technology plus general construction subjects.

What's covered in the course?
- The course is studied full-time and offers opportunities to experience a simulated workplace environment for design project tasks. The delivery of the course is complemented by visits to construction sites where you will be able to appreciate theory in context.
- There are opportunities for field trips to support teaching of Geotechnics and Topographic Surveying.
- Reflecting the requirements of the civil engineering industry, the course takes on board the changes occurring with methods of design and construction.
- You will be taught by experienced academic staff; many of them have worked in industry for a number of years and bring with them a wealth of skills and knowledge.

Employment Opportunities
There are no standard job designations, but generally a successful graduate will obtain a post as a Graduate Engineer and dependent upon performance will progress, in some cases to senior management, but in others will require Chartered status before further progression (usually within consulting engineers and local/central government).
Placements
We encourage you to further enhance your career prospects by including an industrial placement in your course. This takes place after the second year of study and extends the course duration to four years.
As well as providing the workplace experience that many employers are looking for, a placement provides an invaluable opportunity to further develop your practical expertise, earn money and try out a potential career path. The Faculty's placements team will give you every support throughout the placement process.
