This course focuses on contemporary fine art practice and promotes individual and original creative expression. We encourage you to become a contemporary practitioner and enter your profession or industry at the highest level with a range of transferable skills. The optional year-long placement allows you to experience life as a practising artist in a real-world setting.
We focus on the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary art with no restrictions on media. You'll be able to work with painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, sound, video, photography and performance. We support you if you wish to take on difficult, complex and ambitious forms of ideas within your own creative activities.
The course is organised around the interrelationship between studio activity, professional orientation and critical reflection. You'll develop an understanding of practical skills, research, knowledge and contextual dialogue, as well as skills of evaluation, interpretation and presentation.
Our graduates have won awards and prizes such as the Northern Graduates Prize, The Alternative Turner Prize and 4 New Sensations, a joint venture between the Saatchi Gallery and Channel 4. You may go on to further study at the Royal College of Art or a successful career as a gallery artist and in museums and curatorial employment, media or teaching.
