About the programme
Mechanical Engineering - Design and Industrial Innovation is a programme offered by Copenhagen University College of Engineering, where design creativity and knowledge of technology are an integral part of the structure of the curriculum. The programme is offered at the following level of study:
A 3½-year Bachelor of engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering - Design and Industrial Innovation.
Design is central to engineering and vice versa. It involves both creative and logical thinking. The design process is often concerned with the innovation of new products to meet human needs. Design is certainly not just about aesthetics, it encompasses a vast range of subjects.
Everywhere today we are surrounded by design products such as aircraft, vacuum cleaners, artificial hip joints, paperclips, etc. We live in a rapidly changing world and have to be ever more adaptive to meet current challenges. Innovative designers are always looking for new opportunities, for example can a product be improved, or is there potential to develop a totally new product?
Traditionally, design engineering programmes have been either art and design or engineering-based. However, in the future, the most successful designers will be those educated as both engineering professionals who understand and can apply the latest technologies, and designers who understand creative design processes, design principles and their applications.
The goal of the programme
The Engineering Design and Industrial Innovation programme aims to provide a strong interaction between creativity and human factor design together with practical technology through engineering, materials and process principles, enabling the students to obtain unique interdisciplinary skills to evaluate design problems.
The programme offers further courses at more advanced level in engineering subjects in which students will be able to investigate more specialised areas of technological design such as energy or transport.
The curriculum combines a balanced programme of creative design and engineering course study work together with a third essential element, an integrated workshop application of those studies.
Throughout the programme, there is a complete integration of activities involving the two contexts (i) engineering design, and (ii) industrial innovation
Project management skills
This programme will provide you with sufficient knowledge of fundamental engineering and design principles to become a product design practitioner.
It will encourage multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary design processes, challenging you to develop your intellectual competence and project management skills.
You will develop your analytical skills in engineering science, creative potential, and appreciation of management. To become the innovator of a successful product, you will need to understand the context in which a product will be used.
You will also need to understand technology, materials and methods of manufacture: how will it be produced and how will it perform? Finally, you will gain some appreciation of what is the best strategy to bring the product to market.
Benefits
The benefits of this programme will be evident in the strength and breadth of skills such as:
Design and innovation are increasingly important in today’s world and key to future business success and national prosperity.
Opportunities for new markets and innovation are currently opening up, creating challenges that can best be addressed through the systematic application of design.
The prospective graduates will gain an in-depth understanding of new technological developments and socio-cultural requirement in product development. This unique combination will place them in a favourable position in comparison with current engineering and design graduates.
